The Shopify Undo Button
How store recovery actually works, what Shopify cannot restore for you, and the 15-minute plan every merchant should create before something breaks.
Shopify1Percent is a paid partner of Rewind. This audit and recovery plan are designed to be useful whether or not you install the product.
Does Shopify back up your individual store?
Shopify protects the platform, but it cannot restore an individual merchant's deleted or overwritten store data for them. Rewind describes this as a shared-responsibility gap. Shopify keeps the infrastructure running. The merchant remains responsible for recoverable copies of products, themes, collections, pages, customer data and other store content.
One mistake rewrote 11,000 products. Rewind put them back in 30 minutes.
Moomin reported that 11,000 products were mistakenly overwritten with false information. Rewind's case study says the catalog was recovered in 30 minutes. The same team estimated that manually restoring the store could have taken roughly 110 days.
“We were able to recover 11,000 products that were mistakenly overwritten with false information in just 30 minutes.” Jonas Forth, Head of Digital at Moomin
What does a Shopify product export actually protect?
A CSV can be useful for moving or editing certain product fields. It is not a complete, versioned copy of your store and it does not give you a point-in-time restore process.

Protected stores do not depend on one app or one person remembering what to do. They build four connected layers.
Back up
Keep automated, versioned copies of products, variants, images, themes, collections, customers, orders, pages and more.
Test
Preview app, theme and code changes before using the live storefront as the experiment.
Monitor
Catch broken customer journeys, downtime and large product changes before customers become the alert system.
Recover
Restore an affected item or roll back more broadly to a known good version when the damage has spread.
What would recovery look like in your store?
Select a scenario to see why the right recovery layer changes the response.
A CSV import overwrote thousands of products.
Titles, prices, descriptions or metafields now contain the wrong values.
Compare exports, identify every affected record and rebuild the catalog field by field.
With versioned backupsIdentify the last healthy version and restore the affected products or broader catalog scope.
An app changed or removed store data.
The app performed exactly what it was permitted to do, but the result was not what the team expected.
Open a support ticket, reconstruct the changes and hope the app provider retained enough information.
With versioned backupsCompare versions, isolate the affected data and restore from before the app change.
A theme or code deployment broke the storefront.
Navigation, product pages or conversion-critical components stopped working after a release.
Customers discover the problem first, while the team searches for the change that caused it.
With protection layersTest before launch, detect the problem quickly and restore the last healthy theme version.
An AI tool made a wrong change at machine speed.
Hundreds or thousands of records changed before a person noticed the pattern.
Review every changed record and manually decide what should be reversed.
With an undo layerUse on-demand backups, version history and granular restore to contain the blast radius.

The value becomes obvious on the day a normal change turns into a business-critical problem.
Moomin recovered a damaged catalog in 30 minutes.
Rewind's case study says manually recreating the same data could have represented roughly 110 days of work.
SeaMonster Studios recommends protection for every client.
The agency describes Rewind as a safeguard against accidental deletion, compromise and costly downtime.
One restore prevented an extended outage.
A testimonial supplied by Rewind says the tool saved a site from more than a day of downtime.

The worst store problems rarely begin with a hacker.
I have operated ecommerce stores since 1998. The painful incidents usually begin with something ordinary. A CSV import. A bulk edit. An app. A developer pushing a quick fix.
AI makes the same category of mistake more important because one wrong instruction can change thousands of records at machine speed.
Rewind gives a Shopify team the ability to return to a known good version instead of rebuilding the store from memory.
